Job Description:

The Department of Pathology at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute is seeking an experienced M.D. or Ph.D. scientist with technical expertise in diagnostic assay development and/or research pathology, as well as research administration, scientific writing, and project management. The Scientific Research Manager will report to the Department Chair and works with the Business Office of the Department of Pathology using their field-specific knowledge to develop and advance new strategic directions for the department, namely developing infrastructure and workflows to support diagnostic innovations at the Institute as well as developing scientific and educational programs with our partnering clinical departments.In addition to pathology faculty, the successful applicant will interact with medical oncologists working on early cancer detection and interception, technical staff in the department's Core lab, business development directors, and industry partners. The successful applicant will have the ability to lead multiple projects and must demonstrate excellent judgement in prioritizing complex and sometimes competing activities.Located in Boston and the surrounding communities, Dana-Farber Cancer Institute is a leader in life changing breakthroughs in cancer research and patient care.   • With the Department Chair and DFCI scientific leadership, this role will evaluate and establish strategy and goal setting for the department (including its Core lab) and drive implementation of the department strategic initiatives.
  • As key thought leader, the role will partner with the department Research Operations Manager to implement strategic plans for operations, space, and equipment; in addition identifying laboratory instrument platforms in alignment with new strategic direction (e.g., investing in new technology, other instruments, etc) and in collaboration with institute initiatives.
  • Work effectively in cross-organization environment by collaborating with clinical investigators and industry partners to develop Pathology department support for projects requiring clinical research laboratory testing, including liquid biopsy testing and tissue-based biomarker assays.
  • Executes responsibilities for day-to-day operations in the Pathology Department Core lab and plays an active role in major decision-making with department leadership.
  • Plays a key role in fundraising, visibility, and grant writing. Provides scientific writing and editing for instrument and infrastructure grant applications, assay development proposals, educational training programs, and industry sponsored research agreements. Develops websites and materials for Innovations and Philanthropy offices.
  • Responsible for the development and maintenance of project tracking systems, progress reporting, deliverable tracking, and reporting of variances and development of contingency plans to keep project milestones on track. Prepares and presents status reports to key stakeholders.
  • Assists with all aspects of new assay and new protocol development. May be asked to interpret complex data sets.
  • Serves as a scientifically knowledgeable resource for the Departmental Administrator, participating in faculty communications, talent recruitment, and event planning within the Dana-Farber Pathology department and across partnering clinical departments in the Harvard Medical School system.
  • Performs other duties, as required, including special projects.KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:
    • Excellent judgement and demonstrated ability to prioritize complex and sometimes competing activities.
    • Excellent written and oral communication skills, including outstanding scientific writing and editing skills and a demonstrated interest in this work.
    • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
    • Demonstrated ability to lead multiple projects including developing and meeting scope-defined deliverables and required key performance standards.
    • Must have an expert knowledge of and commitment to research ethics and the responsible conduct of research.
    • Competent in primary Microsoft Suite applications, for example, Word, Excel, and Outlook.
    • Experience with citations software, for example Endnote, and software for data and image analysis and illustrations is needed.MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
      • M.D. with specialty training in pathology and research experience, and/or a Ph.D. is required. (Clinical credentialing is not required)
      • 5 years experience with technical knowledge in pathology is required, including prior training in surgical / anatomic pathology or clinical pathology / laboratory medicine or research pathology.
      • Experience in an academic institution is preferred.
      • Experience migrating and scaling diagnostic assays from research settings to clinical or clinical-research settings is preferred.
      • Project management experience is required.
      • Supervisory experience is strongly preferred in a matrixed environment.
